The world, as it stands
This is the short version.
At the fires you’ll hear it longer, differently, and wrong on purpose.

Once the world had one tongue, and built a tower to bother the sky. The sky broke the tongue into a thousand pieces and threw them to the corners of the earth. Most tellers call that a punishment. On this shore we call it a gift, because difference is where meaning lives.
The pieces pooled thickest on the warmest shore, where the scattered tongues eventually came to trade. Words got braided there. And four things turned out to need no language at all: a cup handed over, a line drawn between this and that, a weight that’s honest, and a made thing with the showing of how. Four guilds grew up around them. Cups, Swords, Coins, and Staves. Take out a deck of cards and you’re holding their roster.
Later, words learned to mean more than they said. Later still, they were asked to mean everything, and a word that means everything means the same as the word beside it.
Then the tower came back. One language, one word for one thing, the way it was before the sky reached down, except that this time the words had become hollowed out, and the flat words wouldn’t carry what they were asked to carry. Language broke. The stone says it happened in 2222: four twos, one from each suit, every guild at its weakest.
The law let go, and the money, and the maps. The stones above the dead went quiet, and the letters people had from them stopped speaking mid-sentence.
Why here
The survivors followed the warm water to the one town the flattening never quite finished.
Because the songs were in two tongues, and you can’t flatten a thing that’s already two things. Because the recipes lived in hands and were never written down, so there was nothing to take. Because that sea has never read a word in its life and isn’t going to start. Because the four guilds were never in words to begin with.
And because of one book of deliberate nonsense, which nobody here will name and everybody here misquotes on purpose.
The tower
They’re building it back, in the ruin of the first one, out of fires. Every story told in a different tongue is a stone. It’s never finished and it’s never one language, and that’s the entire difference.
The first tower was built by people who agreed on everything. This one’s built by people who agree on nothing except who drinks first.

The stone
Inscription at the foot of the Lobster. Afterland, 2285. One line has gone to weather. The gap is left as found.
Stranger, you are reading this because someone poured for you first.
That is older than the stone, and older than its letters.
The world once had one tongue, and built a stair to trouble the sky.
The sky scattered the tongue like seed.
What broke did not lessen.
A thousand mouths went out holding meanings no other mouth could hold.
It gathered here, at warm water.
The water is warm, and no one has ever explained it.
This was an age when the years were not yet fenced,
and a knight could drink with a sailor not yet born.
Four things needed no words at all.
A cup handed over.
A line drawn between this and that.
A weight that is true.
A made thing, and the showing of how.
Our words were braided there, one word of many mouths.
Their marks drifted between two tongues, and both are right.
One law reached us with no paper beneath it.
The stranger drinks first.
A mask was never a place to hide.
It is a second face, and both of them show.
A girl too young for the room asked why it all meant twice.
No one had asked it before.
After her, a word could mean more than it said,
and no one had to put either half down.
She is on no list. Every account of her dress disagrees.
Then a word was asked to mean everything,
and the tea did not run out,
and no one washed up,
and it was the same hour for a very long time.
〔 lost 〕
Then one tongue again, and one word for one thing,
and the word was hollow, and it broke.
The year was 2222. Four twos. One from each suit. Every guild at its weakest. It reads the same from either end.
Small things spared us.
Two languages at one table.
Bread never written down.
A sea that has never read.
And a book of deliberate nonsense, which we do not name,
and misquote nightly, and so keep.
At every door, in every age, the same question.
Once you answered with your hands.
Then with anything but your name.
Then no one was listening.
Here, with one name, and not before the cup is empty.
Above you stands a thing no one wrote a reason for.
Four guilds claim it. No paper survives to judge.
It outlived everything that had one.
So have we.
Beside it we are building the stair again,
wrong, and slowly, in every tongue we have,
and we will not finish it, and that is the point.
As long as the Lobster stands, so do we.
Pour first. Ask after.
Raised by the blades, who lost.
The rest is told at the fires, 1 to 3 October 2027.
